Competition Details

The Hastings Open Bowls Tournament has been held annually since 1911 and is a Five Star Tournament licensed by Bowls England.

The Hastings Open Bowls Tournament is a mixed open one week tournament.

DRESS CODE
Excerpt from CONDITIONS OF PLAY:
2. Players, Umpires and Markers shall wear smooth-soled and heel-less footwear as approved by W.B. whilst playing on the greens or acting as Umpires or Markers (W.B. Appendix A.2).
Smart Dress please - no jeans or T-Shirts.
White above/Grey below - the waist preferable.
Shorts if worn must be tailored. Wets if required should preferably be white. Finals to be played in Whites below the waist, although the Committee would prefer all Whites.
3. Bowls England, County (Registered), Club (Registered) & Bowls Manufactured Trousers (or equivalent)/Shirts/Headwear - These may be worn at all times.

Hastings Open Bowls Tournament is played at White Rock Gardens commencing the second Monday in August each year. The Charity open mixed triples competition, in aid of local charities, is held on the last Sunday in September each year and marks the closing of the outdoor bowls season. The Hastings Open Bowls Tournament consists of Ladies' Singles, Men's Singles, Ladies' Pairs and Men's Pairs and Open Triples event where teams can be mixed or single sex. Lawn bowlers enter from various lawn bowls clubs in England, the UK and abroad. The Hastings Open Bowls Tournament greens overlook the English Channel. Accommodation is available in the heart of 1066 country where there are numerous attractions to be found in Battle and St. Leonards. Also close to Hastings & St. Leonards are the towns of Eastbourne, Rye, Tunbridge Wells and Brighton. The Hastings Open Bowls Tournament greens are close to Priory Meadow Shopping Centre. The Hastings End of Season Triples Charity Tournament is a highly popular tournament. Get your entry in early to avoid disappointment as entries may be limited.

LADIES’ SINGLES—4 bowls, 21 shots

Winner: £200 and the Philpot Trophy.

Runner-up: £100 and the Dobell Trophy

Non-local best in Singles: £30


MEN’S SINGLES—4 bowls, 21 shots

Winner: £400, miniature cup and the Tradesmen’s Singles Challenge Trophy

Runner-up: £200 and the Saunders Memorial Trophy

Losing Semi-finalists: two prizes of £40 each

Losing Quarter-finalists: four prizes of £15 each

Local best in Singles: £15 and the President’s Cup


LADIES’ PAIRS—4 bowls, 21 ends

Winners: £60 each and the McIlroy Trophy

Runners-up: £30 each and the Hastings & St Leonards Club Trophy

Losing Semi-finalists: four prizes of £20 each


MEN’S PAIRS—4 bowls, 21 ends

Winners: £100 each and the Blackman Pairs Challenge Trophy

Runners-up: £50 each and the Cecil Dengate Trophy

Losing Semi-finalists: four prizes of £20 each

Local best in Pairs: £10 each and the Ron Garnar Memorial Shield


OPEN TRIPLES—3 bowls, 18 ends

Winners: £70 each and the Thomas Taylor Challenge Trophy

Runners-up: £35 each and the Gerry Cossins Trophy

Losing Semi-finalists: six prizes of £15 each


All trophies to be held, under guarantee, for one year

Total Prize Money £2,150


The Tournament Committee reserves the right to cancel a competition if there are insufficient entries to make it viable.

The Tournament Committee also reserves the right to change dates, times and rinks for games arising because of delays due to bad weather and/or a players being involved in more than one event in the penultimate stages of the competition. We request competitors to please watch the notice board for any changes.
